STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State broke five school senior college records and had several individual players reach career milestones as the Texans snapped a three-game skid with an 80-14 pounding of Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night.
The 80 points scored by Tarleton Saturday is the most points scored in a single game since putting up 70 against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 5, 1994 and was highlighted with 11 touchdowns, which is the most in a game in the senior college era.
The 66 point margin of victory also tops the previous senior college record of a 63-point win, which came against Southwestern Oklahoma on Sept. 26, 2009. The other records to fall were PATs made and PATs attempted as
Blake Barnes was a perfect 11-11 on point-after-touchdowns, topping the previous team records of eight made and nine attempted, and team first downs (43), which topped the previous record of 33. The 11 PATs from
Blake Barnes are also a career best.
For the Javelinas, the 80 points allowed is also the most points allowed by Kingsville in its history.
Over the first five Tarleton drives, the Texans were able to build a 17-7 advantage by scoring two touchdowns and a field goal in between their only two punts of the game.
Collin Strahan found
Le'Nard Meyers for a five-yard score for the first touchdown of the game and, after a 19-yard field goal from Barnes, Tarleton found pay dirt again with a three-yard run from Strahan.
After Tarleton State was forced to punt on its next possession, the Texans started scoring and never let up. Tarleton scored a touchdown on its final nine possessions of the game.
The Texans got two more scores – a six-yard run from Strahan with 5:35 and a one-yard push from
Cody Burtscher with 00:17 – before halftime to head into the break with a 31-7 lead. At halftime, Strahan led the team with 115 rushing yards – and did not lose a single yard nor was he sacked – to go along with 103 passing yards on 15-24 passing.
Out of the break, Kingsville got on the board for the final time by striking first with a 34-yard run on a quarterback scramble. Tarleton responded to that touchdown with 49 unanswered points, which is the most unanswered points scored by Tarleton since scoring 62 in a row against Southwestern Assemblies of God in 1992.
Tarleton tacked on three straight touchdowns to round out the third quarter on an eight-yard run by
Jabari Anderson, a 16-yard pass from Strahan to
Clifton Rhodes III and a two-yard run by Strahan for a 52-14 lead after three quarters.
The final quarter saw Tarleton find the end zone four times with two rushing touchdowns from
Glenn Roberts, a pass from
Zed Woerner to
JaMarquis Durst and a 26-yard run for the score from Anderson.
Joining Barnes with career milestones are Anderson, Roberts, Woerner and Durst. Anderson and Roberts eached recorded their first career rushing touchdowns and first-career multi-touchdown games while Woerner threw his first career pass to Durst, who made his first career touchdown on his first career catch.
As a team, Tarleton State compiled 644 total yards of offense – which was four yards shy of the school record – on 95 total plays. The Texans ran for 376 yards and passed for 386. Defensively, the Texan defense stood up to hold Kingsville to just 215 total yards, including just 38 yards through the air.
Strahan finished the game with 136 rushing yards on 19 carries and 206 passing yards on 20-35 passing with no turnovers. Strahan did not lose a single yard as a rusher, nor was he sacked a single time.
Anderson finished with a career-best 89 yards on eight carries while Roberts also had a career-high rushing effort with 64 yards on seven carries. The receiving corps was led by a career-best effort from
Tyler Wright, who grabbed a game-high eight receptions for 108 yards. This was Wright's first 100-yard game. Tarleton had eight other receivers make catches in the game with Rhodes III (39) and Meyers (27) closest to Wright with four catches each.
On the defensive side,
Alex Anderson also had a career game with a team-leading 11 tackles. This is Anderson's first career double-figure tackle effort as a Texan.
Charles Moore and
Marc Martinez also added six tackles each while Moore had an interception, which he returned for 20 yards, while Martinez added an 18-yard fumble recovery to set up the final score of the game.
Tarleton State will head to Black Water Draw next weekend for meeting with against Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. CST / 6 p.m. MST.
