Texans run away from McMurry in 64-7 rout

Rhodes III, Figures, Moore enjoy record-setting afternoon as Texans top 50 points for third straight game en route to win

ABILENE – In the first meeting between Tarleton State and McMurry in over 20 years, the Texans picked up right where they left off in 1990 with a 64-7 win over the Warhawks at Wilford Moore Stadium.

This is the 14th straight win for Tarleton over McMurry dating back to 1984 and was the first meeting between the two teams since the Texans beat McMurry 42-7 in 1990, bringing the total score of the last two games between Tarleton and McMurry to 106-14.

Tarleton State, which entered this game on back-to-back record-setting performances, continued its torrid pace and reached three more senior college-era records with Clifton Rhodes III highlighting the day by becoming the school's all-time receiving yardage leader with 2,615 career yards.

After breaking the school's record for career receptions last week, Rhodes III broke Devin Guinn's yardage record by posting 82 yards on four catches and a touchdown.

In addition to Rhodes' record, a pair of Texan defenders also etched their name in the Tarleton record books as Devin Figures returned a fumble recovery 98 yards for a touchdown and Charles Moore intercepted three of Tarleton's four picks on the afternoon.

For Figures, his scoop-and-score came with 4:51 in the second quarter when the Warhawks drove down to the two-yard line. When trying to stretch for the end zone at the goal line, McMurry coughed up the football into the arms of Figures. The senior's run to pay dirt broke the previous record-long fumble return for a touchdown of 85 yards by Ken Jones on Oct. 9, 2003.

Moore, a senior safety from Carrollton, grabbed a career-high three interceptions on the day, becoming the fifth Texan since 1982 to pick off three passes in a game and the first since Richard Chambers against Midwestern State on Oct. 8, 2005.

After the defense forced a three-and-out to open the game, Tarleton State wasted no time getting on the board as Zach Henshaw took the first offensive play of the game 23 yards to the house. The Texans added another first quarter score on a 12-yard pass from Collin Strahan to Trent Gow for the sophomore tight end's second career touchdown and a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter.

McMurry got its lone score of the game seven seconds into the second quarter, but Tarleton answered right back on a nine-yard touchdown run by Strahan.

Tarleton scored again at 4:51 on the Figures fumble return and punched in a two-point conversion on a fake-PAT rush by Strahan to lead 29-7. The Texan QB found the end zone again with 42 seconds left in the half to send the Texans into the break with a 36-7 advantage.

The Texans added second half touchdowns from Rhodes III, Meyers and a pair of rushing scores from Jabari Anderson to go on to their 64-7 win. This is the second time in Tarleton's senior college-era in which the Texans have topped 50 points in three straight games. It is the third time overall, joining 2001 and 1919 as a junior college.

Strahan threw for 197 yards and three scores on 15-22 passing with no turnovers and was not sacked while adding 41 yards and two scores in the ground on just 10 carries.

Zach Henshaw led the Texans in rushing with 114 on eight carries while Cody Burtscher (8-62), Anderson (6-46), Glenn Roberts (9-45) and Zed Woerner (3-14) rounded out the Texan rushing effort of 322 yards on 44 carries.

Rhodes III led all receivers with 82 yards four catches while Tyler Wright was the most-targeted pass-catcher with five receptions for 58 yards.

Defensively, Anthony Gonzales and Marc Martinez led the team with nine tackles each. Gonzales also had 2.5 sacks and 3.0 tackles for a loss – four of his total tackles were solo. Alex Anderson also had eight tackles for Tarleton.

As a team, the Texans picked off four passes on the day with Moore grabbing three and Figures snatching the other.

Tarleton State will return home next weekend for the final regular season game of the year as they host Angelo State at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
