Defensive back that helped Tarleton to the TIAA title and national playoffs in 1978. After an injury to the Tarleton quarterback in the national playoff game, Smalley was forced to play quarterback and completed 11 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown. As a defensive back, Smalley had 34 solo and 18 assisted tackles in 1978 with 4 tackles for a loss and 7 pass breakups. He had 4 interceptions for 79 yards in 1976. Smalley earned three football letters at Tarleton and was a three-time All-Conference honoree (1976, 1978, and 1979).
